Private VCs outperform government funds in betting on scale-up winners, report finds

Great summary of Charles Plant’s (a startup researcher) 2023 Narwhal List, an evaluation of venture capital performance in Canada, by Catherine McIntyre at The Logic.

Based on his method of assessment, “government funds aren’t getting access to Canada’s best companies, or U.S and private funds are better at supporting portfolio firms—or both.”

We have got to keep iterating, as a nation, to make sure that the fastest growing Canadian opportunities are funded by Canadians, so that we can have increased confidence that they will continue to grow globally from Canada. We are improving, but are we improving fast enough? Not nearly.

Too much of our IP, data and talent still builds wealth and opportunity elsewhere in the world. We have to keep pushing to get better.
